Marvin

PAW kitty Marvin passed away on October 27, 2014. He survived over two years following his initial cancer diagnosis, squamous cell carcinoma on his nose (removed surgically). Such an unexpectedly long survival time is a testament to the exquisite care he received from his devoted foster parents. And, in Marvin's case, devotion flowed both ways. What a gift Marvin was to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in Peace little man.

Yours was indeed a life well lived.

Marvin is an example of what can happen to cats, particularly those with white or light-coloured fur, if they suffer too much exposure to the sun. Drastic surgery can be avoided if owners are vigilant and take steps to protect their animals from the harmful rays of the sun. Keep pets like Marvin indoors and away from direct sun, especially when the sun is at its hottest. Also, you can apply child-friendly sunblock to their most vulnerable areas - nose and the edges of their ears. If you notice a change in the pigmentation

of your pet's skin, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

UPDATE:  Marvin's luck did not hold out. In the fall of 2013, we discovered his cancer had metastasized to his lymph system. It was with heavy hearts that we had to accept this new development.  However, several months later, he continues to be the same sweet Marvin - making the most of each day - playing and loving and enjoying life to the very best of his abilities.  For his devoted foster mom, each day is more precious than the previous.

History:

In the summer of 2007, Marvin was an unfortunate drop-off on an elderly person's acreage.  She was sure he was a de-clawed cat - that shows you how gentle he was with her. He could have been a couple of years old at that time, or older - it's impossible to know for sure.  Marvin was then adopted from PAW shortly after that.  But five years later, Marvin was returned along with two other PAW cats, Dude (since adopted) and Rachael (still waiting). Their family was moving away and cited "downsizing" as the reason for returning the cats. How sad for these three wonderful cats.  Marvin was returned with a serious problem - a carcinoma on his nose.  Read Marvin's Health Journal for more detail.

Personality:

Marvin is an exceptional cat.  He has a one of a kind personality.  He is gentle, curious, playful, very loving and has an amazing ability to adapt to new circumstances.  He is full of delightful energy.  He races up the cat furniture, just happy with life itself.  He is definitely a lap cat and will ask you to take a few moments and sit with him. He enjoys looking out the window at the world around him. He loves to have your attention and be scratched and petted.  He purrs and head butts and loves to sleep with his person. He is adorable.
